Decide Which Reusable Water Bottle Is The Best For You

Right, that's it. You there, with the disposable water bottle in hand. It's time to put it down, once and for all.

We've known for years that plastic water bottles are a bad habit we need to kick to prevent them from adding to the already horrendous amount of plastic polluting our earth, but over the past few months, the campaign to stamp out plastic bottles has ramped up a gear, culminating in last week's news of a study which found microplastics in supermarket bottled water - suggesting it's something we've been ingesting as well.

It's time to get yourself a re-usable plastic water bottle. And stat. But there's a lot on offer; which one to choose? To make sure you get the right one for you, we got team R29 to try out a whole bunch then rate them on weight, taste, looks and more so you can make an educated investment.

Stay Sixty

Now this is one sexy bottle. Smooth without being slippery. Bottom bit comes off for easy cleaning so no mucky smell hanging around. You'll definitely look good with it. Wow, is life so bleak I sort of fancy this water bottle? Maybe! It's only 500ml though and I feel like if you're going to lug a water bottle about you want 700ml minimum. Totally useless rubbery tag on it though. If you're going to add anything, put a carabiner on these things and be done with it.

Kleen Kanteen

I've had this bottle for over a year, so it's stood the test of time. I have a weird attachment to it, much like my KeepCup, so it travels everywhere with me. The metal keeps your water tasting fresh and surprisingly not at all metallic (I hate how plastic or glass re-usable bottles never feel fully clean, the water can taste a bit "off"). The bottle is single wall, so it can dent a bit but I quite like that, it feels friendly and like something I genuinely don't feel like I'll need to replace, they really do last. 10/10 from me.

Brita

I hate how heavy a lot of these re-usable water bottles are and, because I drink a lot of water, I need a really big one. I've been carrying around this Brita one for about a month now and yes, whilst it is plastic, it does fit a litre of liquid in and not weigh any more than a regular plastic bottle would. It's got a charcoal filter too which I will certainly not replace as much as I should.

BRITA fill&go Active Water Filter Bottle, £13.20. Available at Brita

Bkr

The shape of the bkr bottle reminds me of a Red Stripe beer bottle which might have been instrumental in helping me drink more water. It is easy to clean and heavy enough not to tip over, but still light enough to carry in my bag. It's not practical for the gym, but it fully replaced my previous water bottle. 9/10.

S'ip S'well

Now I'm a big fan of the humble water bottle. Carrying one around with me always leaves me feeling a little bit smug, I channel my eco-warrior vibes and attempt to keep my hydration levels sky high. In terms of the pros 'the Sip' is super sleek looking and keeps cold water really very cold (A+ for the summer time) but when it came to transporting hot coffee, it was cold by the time I made it to the office (even though it claimed to keep hot things hot too). Having to take the lid off and not lose it each time also became a chore (I'm clumsy and busy). My advice would be that this bottle is for the people who want a design-focused product for the office, that keeps water really cold. I think it's too heavy and high maintenance for using at the gym or for someone always on the go.

Firebox

I’ve never had to review a water bottle before so I’m not sure what to say. Firstly, it didn’t leak which I”m guessing is the primary consideration before making a purchase. It was light and it transported water from A to B. The water stayed cool and after a couple of rounds, lost the slightly tinny taste. If mermaid vibes are your thing, this could definitely be the bottle for you.

Mermaid Fuel Sports Bottle, £14.99. Available at Firebox

Dopper

First impression: why has Jess given me a breast pump to drink from? Upon actually drinking water from the bottle though, I could see past the baby milk vibe and really liked the nifty little guy. It’s light enough to carry round even when full, it breaks into three sections so is easy to wash and store, as keeping it disassembled stops it smelling like a dusty bin. I just don’t get the lid shape, but that aside, 10/10.

One Green Bottle

This bottle is my new partner for life. I don't like plastic water bottles cos they always have a taste/smell, don't they? So this metal lass is great. Good size, fun colour, no spills and a silhouette that matches my body type (slightly stout and a flat bottom) – ticks all my boxes. My only gripe is that the straw doesn't reach the whole way to the bottom, leaving me with a precious 50 mls I just can't suck up. The straw also has the potential to be a bit finnicky with cleaning but so far I've managed. I think we're going to be very happy together.

S'well

I've always wanted one of these bottles but they're a bit spenny at £42, however after using it for a few days it's safe to say it's well worth it. Firstly, its metallic ombre finish looks great, secondly it has a really nice weight to it and most importantly, it keeps your water as cold as ice which is a BIG plus for me (if you're not feeling that chilled water vibe then I'd definitely steer clear, as even with the lid off it stays really cold) It also leaves no metallicy taste either! My only negative would be that the lid annoyed me slightly, as it's a screw top, so it means you're always losing the lid* or leaving it somewhere, but hey, you can't have it all!

* This lid on the bottle in this pic has yet to be released in the UK.

Chilly's

Firstly, I absolutely LOVED the design. Made an everyday item, fun to look at. Who doesn't love flamingos.

My water stayed freezing cold for hours (maybe too cold for me!). The screw top wouldn't be ideal for using in the gym, but was totally fine for the office. Would recommend this bottle.

Black + Blum

"I love camping for many reasons. 1. It’s outdoors. 2. It’s an excuse not to wash my hair for a week. 2. Where else is it ok to wear two flannel shirts together. This stainless steel bottle makes me feel like I’m camping all the time. It’s the perfect size and keeps water cool, and doesn’t make it taste tinny. It’s sturdy too, so will still be drinking out of it in ten years. Yesterday I walked home with it in my bag singing Waltz Sing Matilda in my head."
